A Letter to My Daughter

On the day you were born, I held you in my arms and stared at you.  You were beautiful.  You are beautiful, but you are so much more than that.  You are kind.  You are smart.  You are strong.  You believe in justice and get upset when someone is treated unfairly.  You are brave and willing to stand up for what is right.  Your heart is tender and you hurt when your friends hurt.  You have faith in mankind and see people as honest, truthful, and good.  You amaze me.

I wish you could see yourself the way I see you; without shame, self doubt, and pain clouding the image.  You are a bright star in a dark sky.  Your value is beyond measure and your beauty beyond imagination.  Your future is full of joy and wonder.  The mark you will leave on this world will be indelible.

If I could take pain away from you, I would.  If I could hurt in your place, I would.  I am so sorry that I cannot save you from the suffering you are experiencing now, but I know that you will come through it, and on the other side of this current darkness there is light. I will be here with you in the dark.  I will hold your hand if you let me.  I will be by your side.  I will call out to you, so that even when you cannot see me, you will know you are not alone.  I have walked through darkness before.  I know the path is difficult, but I have also seen the light.  It is closer than you realize.

My precious child, you will be great and great things will happen in this world because of you.

I am proud to be your mother.

Her 4th birthday <3
